In July last year Marie wrote the following:
“The last few days I have, at every turn, encountered people being bullied, subject to prejudice and the refusal of so many, being too scared, to risk speaking truth to power. Turned the news on just now – no idea why I thought that would cheer me up – to hear the latest appalling exploits of Trump. I am reminded constantly of the poem by Pastor Martin Niemoller:
‘First they came for the Communists
And I did not speak out…
Because I was not a Communist
Then they came for the Socialists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Socialist
Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a trade unionist
Then they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out
Because I was not a Jew
Then they came for me
And there was no one left
To speak out for me.’”
From that, various conversations have resulted in this exploratory workshop, ’Speaking Truth to Power’, on 8th March, which is also, quite appropriately, International Women’s Day. Marie and I will lead this workshop and we would love for you to join us. We are limiting numbers to 18.
What is going on in the world is, in many ways, a wake-up call. A wake-up call to speak truth to power, and to ourselves. Too often abuse of power and unethical behaviours (in relationships, teams, organisations and countries) are condoned by the failure of people to speak their truth in response. As individuals we may be fearful to speak up, but we risk ourselves by not speaking out.
The questions we will address in this workshop are:
What is power?
How do you relate to power outside and inside yourself
What does it mean to be powerful?
What does it take, as an individual, to stand up and speak truth to power?
How do we best do that?
How should we prepare ourselves?
What are we prepared to risk?
So, this workshop is about our relationship to power, risk, trust, truth and loss. Small stuff then!
