Embodiment & The Yin-Yang of It All – Bray

Dates: 21 October 2024

Venue: Gorse Hill, Bray, Co. Wicklow

Facilitator: Paul King

Underlying my approach to Leadership Embodiment are many explorations.  One of the most significant is my study of Tai Chi with a particular teacher. His name Chungliang (Al) Huang. I first met him forty years ago. Last Easter I spent five days with him in Switzerland on his last teaching visit to Europe from his home in the US. He is now 86 and moves amazingly for his age and his energy is still vibrant.

My learning with him has been an experiential inquiry into chi and the relational conversation between masculine and feminine principles of yin-yang, revealed through the breath, movement, posture, space and more.

From well before Leadership Embodiment, he showed me how our movement connects with our psychology and emotions. He worked closely with the mythologist Joseph Campbell of Hero’s Journey fame and with the philosopher Alan Watts, among other thought leaders. He has written many books, his first book, Embrace Tiger Return to Mountain, has become a classic in the field of tai chi and Taoist wisdom.

I  am offering this workshop as another step on the embodied inward and outward journey, deepening and broadening your inquiry in a light and playful way, as a bodily experience and as a metaphoric exploration of your life’s path.

The tai chi I will be drawing on is a unique free-flowing approach created by Chungliang. We will practice moving from centre, feeling our centre of gravity as a source of substance, balance, uplift, grounding, ease, calm, alertness and perspective on our life journey. We will use music to bring different qualities out of ourselves and into our movement.

The experience can be deep and profound and always has relevance for the everyday.  As Chungliang says, “tai ji is not about the form, it is about how we reach for the rice packet from the top shelf in the supermarket”.

We will revisit some of the LE practices from this tai chi experience. We will also touch into other somatic embodiment practices as well as take time for reflection and conversation and I will share an introduction to what I call Qi Leadership. (Qi being the Japanese word for Chi).
