In flow we experience ease, connectivity, creativity, and high performance. Often flow sneaks up on us, suddenly we find ourselves ‘in the zone’. This webinar series explores the experience of flow and what we can do to consciously create it. Also, and somewhat paradoxically, to stop trying to find flow and let it find us.
We will explore flow in the face of challenges and when under pressure. At a group, organisational and societal level we will consider how flow might help us meet today’s many demands, resourcefully, responsively, and resiliently.
In flow we perform at our best, we are effective and efficient. Using our energies well, we become more productive and are less tired. There is an intrinsic rewarding quality to our experience, i.e. we enjoy being in flow and the results we get. We are fully engaged, not distracted, or disrupted by interference. Timothy Gallwey who developed the Inner Game approach had a simple formula, Performance = Potential – Interference. Through awareness, intention, knowledge, understanding and practice we can more fully access the potential we have and address those interferences.
The flow state was brought to modern attention by the research of psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihályi in 1975. Much more understanding has been developed since, not least through neuroscience research. Flow of course was understood within ancient traditions. In Taoism flow might be compared to the idea of wu-wei, often paraphrased in English as ‘doing without doing’ and perhaps better understood as ‘it will be done’, not so much by making it happen but allowing it to happen, i.e. getting out of our own way.
In the series we will explore current flow thinking and embodied practices for developing flow, working with our multiple intelligences. We will also engage in comparative self-modelling and participate in shared conversation and mutual inquiry.
