David Richo

In 2007 Dave Richo ran his first UK workshop for us, under the title, Saying Yes to the Givens of Life & Relationships, based on his recent book. The participants loved it. He will be returning in Spring 2009.
The five significant givens are:

  1. Everything changes and ends,
  2. Things do not always go according to plan,
  3. Life is not always fair,
  4. Pain is part of life,
  5. People are not loving and loyal all the time.

Dave explored with us how we cannot find real contentment and success in our lives until we acknowledge and come to terms with these facts and gave us many practical ways of looking at and facilitating change and the development of true emotional intelligence.

Dave Richo, Ph.D., is a psychotherapist, teacher, and writer who draws upon Jungian, Buddhist, and poetic perspectives in his work. He leads popular workshops at the famous Esalen Institute, the University of California at Berkeley, the University of California at Santa Barbara, and Santa Barbara City College. He is the author of How to Be an Adult, How to Be an Adult in Relationships, and Shadow Dance: Liberating the Power and Creativity of Your Dark Side. His latest book is The Five Things We Cannot Change and the Happiness We Find by Embracing Them (Shambhala, 2005).

I’ve had so many insights since the weekend with David I’m not sure I can keep up with the learning”. CH, Consultant

David Whyte

David Whyte is an unusual phenomenon. He is a poet with a client list that includes major international organisations, universities and business schools. He travels the world working with organisations and inspiring individuals within them to have real conversations at the frontier where it really matters and where there is the potential for real change, creativity and making a difference. David brings a fresh and insightful, yet practical perspective to the issue of work and the challenges faced in organisations. His workshops are of value to anyone working with the human condition.

David will be working with us again this year running a 1 day workshop and a salon series.

2008 Salon Series
The Three Marriages: Re-Imagining Work, Self & Relationships

"We invite you to join us for the 2008 salon series with David Whyte. This is a unique format giving participants the opportunity to work with David in an intimate setting over 3 salons during the year. The theme for this series in The Three Marriages: Re-Imagining Work, Self & Relationships, the subject focus of his up-coming book".

David writes:
‘Each of us must sustain three marriages in our lives: The marriage with our work and society, the marriage - official or not - with our partner, and the deeper marriage with our emerging selves. To choose between these relationships is to impoverish them all. Life balance means creating a real conversation, a live frontier between all three commitments that enriches each area of our lives, allowing it to be simultaneously troubled and emboldened by the others.

The commitments to these non negotiable parts of ourselves often involve secret vows, spoken or unspoken, which are determined by our individual make-up and the way we seem to be made for the world. This series offers an opportunity to explore the way each of these three marriages plays out in our lives; more importantly, it should help us understand ways in which it might be possible to make a marriage of these three marriages instead of setting them up as competing, frictional forces’.

Join David at his own frontier for a poetic and compelling investigation of these important commitments of a human life.

Dan Millman, inspirational teacher and author of Way of the Peaceful Warrior lead us on an inspiring adventure to discover The Way and Wisdom of the Peaceful Warrior in May last year. We are all peaceful warriors in training – right here, right now. Our daily life is the arena of our practice. There are no ordinary moments.

Conscious Embodiment

Level 1 – Uncovering Your Somatic Intelligence
Paul King - 7/8 June 2008

Level 2 – Visibility & Invisibility
Wendy Palmer – 13/14 September 2008

Conscious Embodiment is derived from the revolutionary non-aggressive martial art of Aikido and mindfulness practice and was created by Wendy Palmer. This model teaches a simple method for developing a personal "centering" practice. The workshops will involve movement, fully engaging the body in the process of learning about our habitual ways of behaving and thinking and developing alternative responses and actions that cultivates an embodied presence that has integrity, clarity and is capable of being creative and effective in work/home life situations. We will work with such themes as centering under pressure, leadership and followership, advocating and listening from centre. Wendy Palmer is a sixth degree Black Belt in Aikido and teaches at Aikido of Tamalpais in Sausalito, California.

Personal Development Evening Culminating in a Firewalk Marie Faire and Others

This is an evening to remember. Each activity is carefully chosen and facilitated to explore the fears and blocks in our life that stop us becoming and being all we can be.

"If somebody wants to challenge and to learn more about themselves – in a variety of different ways – to push their own boundaries in an environment which feels safe, friendly, caring, supportive and non-pressured, then this is a fabulous way to do it…..quickly and enjoyably. There is always the choice to trust your own instincts and choose not to do something and to know that’s OK too."
J.F., Director, April 2007

Lessons for Leadership from Horse Whispering

A powerful and profound 2-day experiential leadership development event exploring the fundamental principles of leadership through learning and applying the art of horse whispering.

“The amazing thing about this experience is that the horse, unlike people, does not have an axe to grind and does not have an alternative agenda; this means that relationships develop based on your leadership and mutual trust. The sceptics may think this has no relevance to the workplace but having participated I can assure you quite the opposite is true. The course is rich in examples that translate to the workplace and leading people”.
(KG, Director)

For many of us there is sometimes a gap between theory and practice, between what we know and what we do. In this course you will discover where some of those gaps are and how to become a more effective leader and communicator. Working with horses participants come face to face with their personal challenges of leadership and communication. It is profound learning and development. Personal coaching, both in the ring and outside; watching others and group discussion clarifies the principles and lessons for effective leadership in theory and in personal practice.

"The course provided instant feedback and the opportunity to transfer learning to organisational behaviours. I was curious and found the course to be both challenging and thrilling with constant feedback and discussion. The horse waits for your guidance, scary and thrilling and the best adventure I have experienced in my person development. I believe the size of the group contributed to my learning and provided the right balance of see one, do one etc. The accommodation was nice and the arrangements at the farm well organised and the timely application of learning to the organisational contexts was great".
SB, Director of Service Delivery
"For me, no other development programme has come close in terms of the impact and clarity of learning about how I can engage, motivate and inspire others. This is real, accelerated development, simple, clear and starkly self-evident".
LM Management Consultant.
"A development experience like no other - in working with the horses you experience profound and pure feedback, not clouded by agendas, egos, politics and so on. The learning from this will stay with me forever - the lessons for life and learning are amazing".
SJ, CE

The Beyond NLP Trainer Training - On Becoming an Empty Flute

Marie Faire with Liz and Ian Newton and Guests - Starts 9 September 2008

Being a great trainer or presenter is much more than developing good skills; it is about finding one’s identity and authentic expression. It is about taking your ego out of the way and becoming “an empty flute”. This training is designed for NLP Master Practitioners who already have some training or facilitation experience and who want to make a step change in their ability to work with and lead groups and become an excellent NLP trainer.

It is a 20 day modular training running over 6 months. Participants will have plenty of opportunity to present and receive feedback during the modules and will be set tasks and assignments throughout the programme and will have the opportunity to model guest trainers. The training is carefully designed to enable you to become fluent in essential training skills and group dynamics and to find your authentic expression as a trainer

"As an experienced trainer, I signed up for this programme hoping to further embed NLP into my ways of thinking and being. I have certainly done that, and I got a lot more besides. I genuinely feel that I am a better trainer for attending this programme, whatever I am delivering, I learned how to dance with my learners, and mostly avoid treading on their toes! I liked the structure of the modules, particularly the guest trainers, and of course I loved the venue - it made a real difference for me to be in such an inspiring and comfortable environment”. MBTI Overview

MBTI theory describes 16 personality types which are derived from 4 dimensions of personality, Extrovert-Introvert, Sensing-Intuition, Thinking-Feeling, Judging-Perceiving and suggests that we each have preferences for a particular aspect of each dimension. MBTI Step I classifies an individual according to these 16 types.

Many people who complete Step I find they agree with maybe 3 out of 4 of the dimensions identified but do so with a 'yes, but' feeling. In some way the profile doesn't quite 'fit'.

What Step II does is divide each personality trait into a further five facets and then indicates where someone has "out of preference" traits, where for example an individual who is generally an extrovert exhibits one or two facets where they are more like an introvert.

People completing Step II find the additional distinctions make their personal profile 'fit' better and when considering the profiles of others Step II provides greater understanding and much more useful information for relating to and managing others.
